Unleashing Your Leadership Potential: Building a Strong Personal Brand with Phil Di Bella

Five Phillip Di Bella's tips to shape your own successful personal brand!

Hi, this is Phil Di Bella and you're listening to FlashCast by PDB. Today we tackle the beautiful topic of personal brand, something I hold dear to my heart. And let me start by saying that whilst you might work within an organization, or own an organization, or run an organization, it doesn't matter where you sit on the.

It really is distinguishing the difference between what is a personal brand and what is the company brand. And there is a big distinction, and to me, you get your best out of your people when you really hone in on working on their personal brand. So let me say that again. If you want to be a great leader, then first work on your personal brand.

And second, ensure that the team that you work with and within your organization is always conscious about their personal brand. I always say about getting people to bring theirs. Self to work. If they bring the best version of themselves to work, then the company brand will always prosper. So at Deela Coffee, it was never about Deela coffee.

Deela coffee was the byproduct. . I believe that if the best version of a person comes to work that cares about their personal brand, then Debella Coffee will succeed no matter what. Because people, let's face it, will always do what they need to do for themselves first. And there's nothing wrong with that.

It's about harnessing Matt as a leader and saying to people, I'm going to bring my best version of myself to work. I'm gonna bring Phil Debella. The Phil Di Bella that's gonna be at his best as day in and day out as he can be. And then Debela coffee will benefit from that. So let me say that from the onset, it's all about working on people's personal brand cuz if they bring their best self to work, then your company brand will flourish.

And let me tell you, there are many facets in the development of processing a personal brand. , um, it will influence the way your daily leadership decisions are made and it will influence, um, the decisions you make in your career. You know, most leaders I find are not mindful of how they manage their personal brands, and this is when they lose momentum, they lose focus, they lose the impact, and they don't get the best out of their people.

You know, leaders are faced with the multitude of situations that happen at work and in their careers. Um, and you need to lead with that personal brand. You need to really understand yourself and those around you because the moment you understand that it's about people, and people drive results, then the person who brings their personal brand to work and cares about their personal brand.

Right. The people that really allow their personal brand to organically evolve and grow and flourish, these are the people that are going to, you know, create magic businesses and magic brands. So how do we do this? Well, let me give you a few things, um, that I find very relevant. So I'm gonna give you five tips that I believe are really.

In, building personal brand and things that we need to be clear on. Remember that leaders that have developed and are managing their personal brand are focused on simplification. They're focused on creating a workplace culture where every employee is given the opportunity to advance where teamwork is valued.

Where the goal is to strengthen the organization and its position. This is what it's all about. This is what leaders do when they're really advocating personal brand. They're making sure that they're creating a workplace culture where every employee has the opportunity to advance and remember that the best you want for your people, the best they will deliver for you.

Leaders that manage their personal brands are those. Continuously cultivate innovation and initiative. Remember that it's all aware about tomorrow, better than today. It's all about making sure that we can be the best versions of ourselves every time we turn up to work and if we care about our personal brand.

It's going to happen. Remember that managing a personal brand is never ending. It's a constant journey. It's never a dis destination. You need to work on it constantly. You need to be conscious of your personal brand, right? The moment you stop managing your personal brand, you'll lose touch with your leadership formula.

You'll lose touch with the workplace, you'll lose touch with the career succession plan. You'll lose touch with whatever it is the moment that you stop focusing on what your personal brand is. So let's go on five. Number one, value your distinction. Really trust your. So really value that. What makes you different?

Remember that most leaders are not aware of what, what makes them unique. We all have individual qualities that make us different to other people. You need to understand what your distinction is. What is your U S P? What is your point of difference? To others because being different is okay. Being different is good.

You just need to harness it. You need to value your distinction. You need to trust yourself, and you need to understand what it really is that makes you different. This is step one behind personal brand. Step two is be responsible. Hold yourself accountable. Once you know exactly what makes you different, be responsible.

Hold yourself accountable. Personal branding is the ultimate individual responsibility. Don't forget that personal brand is all about you. That's why it's called personal. No one manages. Your personal brand, but you, so you need to be accountable for your brand. You know, what is it that you, uh, stand for?

What is your enduring idea? What is your primary differentiator? What is your primary experience that you deliver to those around you? You know, what, who do you serve? These are some great questions that will really help you bring out and flourish, holding yourself accountable. Three, you've gotta be able to communicate your I.

right? I talk about authenticity, one of my number one values. You need to be authentic, but you need to be able to communicate your identity. You need to, so once you know what your identity is, once you know step one, what your distinction is, two, you are prepared to be accountable and responsible for it.

Then three, you need to be able to communicate it. You need to be able to tell people around you exactly what it is that your personal brand is. What does it stand for? What does it look like? You know, what is it that makes you unique and, and, and holds you, you know, different? And what are you gonna hold yourself accountable to?

What is the way, how are you going to talk about it? Remember that personal branding is the ultimate reinvention process. When you are working on your personal brand every day, you have the ability to reinvent yourself into a positive fact. That's what we talk about when we say tomorrow better than today.

You never wanna stop reinventing yourself, but you've gotta keep it authentic. Remember that because fake serves nobody. Fate serves nobody. So you've gotta remember that it's all about that personal brand, that constant journey. It's not a destination, right? Many people have done it. Steve Jobs was probably one of the masters of it that kept moving.

Bill Gates continues to do this. As a leader, you can't enable innovation of products and services unless you can learn to innovate yourself. So you have to have that constant, you know, reinvention process. But you need to be able to communicate your identity in an a. Why four? You need to carefully select yes resources, and one of the biggest resources I talk about is you, you know, human resources.

You need to be able to make sure that you align yourself. And your brand with the right people, with the right opportunity, with the right things that are happening around you. You know something I always talk about is the person doing the best that they can at the time that it's happening with the resources that they have.

This is one of the ways that, you know, tips that I can give you that helps me assess people's personal brand. Is this person doing the best that they can at the time that it's happening with the resources that I have? And that is tip number four. So carefully select your resources. That is a great way for you to understand the concept of personal brand or to help you have a look at your own brand or to assess somebody else's brand.

Are you doing the best that you can at the time that it's happening with the resources that it's happening? And five and final, be entrepreneurial. And what does that mean? Don't be afraid to be. If you can't be first, be different, seize the opportunities. That's what to me is about entrepreneurs seizing opportunities, being better every day, looking at things and saying, how can I make my mark on this?

Where do I stand in this place? This is all about me. This is about my personal brand and why it's called personal brand. So, you know, another good little way to look at that is, what can I keep doing? What must I stop doing and what do I need to start doing? So when you wanna look at being entrepreneurial, a good way to look at it is, what do I keep doing?

What do I stop doing and what do I start doing? Remember that personal brand is a journey. I keep saying it. And remember, in, in, in summing up that there is a big difference in distinction between personal brand and company brand. And the companies that flourish are the ones that care about people's personal.

So go out there and be the best version of yourself and encourage the people around you to be the best versions of themselves. Entrepreneurship is a way of life and intelligence for me, not a title. Every project that I embark upon, my goal is to do it different or better than anyone else. It was this passion and entrepreneurial spirit that led me to start up my first business venture, a small coffee-roasting operation in the suburbs of Brisbane in 2002. I identified a gap in the coffee market. There was no local coffee company that successfully matched the quality of their products with excellent customer service and a strong brand, all at a reasonable price. This business grew from a start up to the largest of its kind in Australia before I sold it 12 years later. I strive to make my group of companies matter to customers. I want to ensure that I am relevant in the future am continually looking at innovative ways to do so. I am not limited by my available resources; I am continually looking to fill the void in the market to meet customer’s needs and solve problems. My mantra is ‘tomorrow better than today’. My goal is to continue building and improving and use our achievements to fuel our momentum and keep moving forward to bigger and better things. I never rest on the laurels of my success but continue to pursue new ventures through which to challenge myself, and seek opportunities to develop or share my skills. I continue to strive as a leader in my industry and as an entrepreneur, and am always challenging myself personally and professionally whilst ensuring to give back to community.
